In June, the 10th Annual Scientific Workshop was held at The Carrington Hotel, Katoomba. The Workshop was attended by 105 delegates, including 46 students. The Workshop continued the intimate theme where research from both HIV and Hepatitis researchers is presented and discussed with the prospect of networking and future collaborations. 64 presentations were given on categories such as Virus Entry and Replication, Pathogenesis, Methods, Vaccines, Therapy and Drug Resistance, and Virus/Host interactions.

The HIV plenary was delivered by Professor Michael Emerman, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington on ‘Paleovirology and the ancient origins of HIV-1’. The Hepatitis plenary was given by Professor Stephan Urban, University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany on ‘Entry and entry inhibition of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis Delta Virus – Novel therapeutic concepts on the horizon’.

The meeting was highlighted by excellent presentations from younger members of the HIV and Hepatitis research community. Breakfast and lunch with the Professor was very successful with 30 students attending.
